Questions to Ask on a Wedding Venue Tour, According to a Venue Owner

Tour Questions Checklist: Printable Download! Make sure you’re asking the right questions on your venue tours. Here’s what you need to know, according to a venue owner who has hosted hundreds of tours at Black Walnut Farm in NY’s Hudson Valley.

If you just got engaged and are starting to plan your big day, you're probably a bit overwhelmed! And we don't blame you one bit– most newly engaged couples have never planned anything as epic as an entire wedding, and there are so many details to consider.

After figuring out your ideal date or season, guest count, and budget, the real fun begins: choosing your wedding venue!

As venue owners who have hosted hundreds of tours of our venue, The Barn at Black Walnut Farm in New York’s Hudson Valley, we have considered every logistical detail, and now we’re sharing the questions YOU should be asking when you tour potential venues.

We believe the more couples understand how wedding venues operate, the smoother the selection process will go for everyone. It's easy to get swept up in certain features at a venue (like that beautiful garden they have for your photos), but you also need to understand if their venue policies and values are a fit for you. Before signing a contract, it's essential to fully understand what each potential venue provides and requires.

We put together a helpful checklist of questions to ask at each wedding venue during your tour.

We've noticed that many couples who come to tour our venue don't ask certain necessary questions– and while we make an effort to share as much information as possible, don't forget that YOU are your best advocate for your own needs and desires for your wedding!

It would be devastating to book your venue and then find they don't allow something you had your heart set on. Venues are held to many policies by their townships, states, and insurance carriers– and each venue might be widely different in terms of what they allow.

To ensure you make an informed decision, asking the right questions during your wedding venue tour is essential. Here's a comprehensive list of questions to guide you through the process and help you find the venue of your dreams. Download it below, and happy touring!

If you're coming to tour Black Walnut Farm- we look forward to seeing you soon! Here are the answers to our venue tour questions checklist as they pertain to our venue.

Logistical Questions:

Is the venue available on our specific wedding date?

Contact us before your tour to check our availability, especially if your date is firm! Check out our Tour Tips here.

How many guests can the venue accommodate?

We can accommodate a maximum of 200 guests on the property.

What type of venue options do you offer, such as banquet halls or outdoor spaces?

We have so many unique spaces at Black Walnut Farm, and our versatility in how you can use them really sets us apart. The Barn includes our main dance hall, a bar area, a speakeasy-inspired lounge, a dressing parlor, and restrooms. Our outdoor spaces include the Shed Bar, the Rose Garden, the Wildflower Meadow, the Forest, and the Front and Back Lawn.

Do you have a preferred vendor list, or can we bring our own vendors?

Yes, when you book your event at The Barn at Black Walnut Farm, we will provide you with our hand-picked list—including wedding planners, florists, photographers/videographers, lodging, rentals, DJs, live music ensembles, hair and makeup, bakeries, officiants, insurance, rentals, transportation, valet parking, and more. Every vendor on our list reflects our dedication to warm-hearted, inclusive service.

What is the parking situation for guests?

A parking lot for 100 cars is currently under construction and projected for completion in early Spring 2024. While you are welcome to offer parking for your guests onsite, we recommend hiring a bus service to shuttle guests for their safety and convenience so they can relax and enjoy all the festivities without worrying about driving. Uber and Lyft aren't reliably available in our area.

Are there any noise restrictions or sound system limitations?

We do not currently have a local noise ordinance, so event end times are flexible! However, as a courtesy to our neighbors, we kindly request that events wrap by midnight. We can recommend some fun options in town (6-8 minutes away) for after-parties.

How much time will we have for setup and breakdown?

We provide access to the property at 8 a.m. on the wedding day for setup. We provide an additional two hours immediately following the event for breakdown. If you need more time or prefer to load in and out on the days surrounding the wedding, a convenience fee may apply; please inquire.

Is there a room flip required for different parts of the wedding day?

We generally don't do a room flip, as we have so many indoor and outdoor spaces you can use during the event. Rain plans may involve flipping specific spaces, but we will walk you through all the options during your planning meeting.

Financial Considerations:

What is the rental fee for the venue?

Our rates are subject to change based on your date or season! Please reach out to us, and we'll send you our current pricing guide: Request Pricing

Are there any additional fees or service charges we should be aware of?

We believe in transparency in pricing and have no additional taxes or service fees applied to the venue rental subtotal.

Do you offer a payment plan, and what are the terms?

We require an initial payment of 50% of the venue rental site fee and a signed event contract. Additional payments are due as follows: 25% ten months before your date and the remaining 25% six months before. If you book with a shorter lead time, we will adjust the payment schedule accordingly!

Is there an overtime fee if the event extends beyond the contracted time?

This will be assessed on a case-by-case basis according to your package. We provide two complimentary hours of load-out time immediately following your event; if you require more or wish to load out the following day, a convenience fee may apply.

Are there any beverage minimums or corkage fees for bringing our own alcohol?

At The Barn at Black Walnut Farm, we have several wonderful catering partners that provide full-service catering and bar packages to our couples. Each caterer has its own alcohol policies, so make sure you ask them this question and get clarity on this when choosing your caterer.

Is there a cake-cutting fee if we choose to have our wedding cake onsite?

Each of our catering partners may have different policies on their services and what they include, so make sure to check in with them so there aren't any surprises.

Catering and Bar Services:

Do you have an in-house caterer, and what menu options are available?

We have several excellent catering partners that provide full-service catering and bar packages at Black Walnut Farm. We work with them to create a flawless experience on your wedding day!

Reach out to us to request sample menus from some of our favorites.

Can the caterer accommodate dietary restrictions or special requests?

It's very important to us as a venue that all of our preferred caterers accommodate special dietary needs—such as gluten-free, vegetarian, or even vegan options! We take allergies seriously, and we will always accommodate them.

Are we allowed to bring in an outside caterer if desired?

If you prefer to hire a caterer not on our list, they must be professional, licensed, and insured, and we can get them approved.

What are the options for bar services, including types of alcohol and beverage packages?

If you plan to have alcohol at your event, it must be provided by your caterer with a NY State Liquor Authority Catering Permit or Off-Premises Catering License. Catering staff must serve all alcoholic beverages. Each caterer will have several different package options ranging from beer/wine only and ranging up to full premium top-shelf open bar.

Is there a corkage fee if we provide our own wine or hard liquor?

New York State requires all alcoholic beverage service to have the proper licenses and permits; your caterer of choice will let you know what is possible according to their specific license. We do not allow alcohol to be served without a permit, and our venue does not provide the permits— they must be secured through your caterer.

Backup Plans and Contingency:

What is the backup plan in case of inclement weather for an outdoor wedding?

We highly recommend a tent rental as a contingency plan to provide a space to move guests to and from while we 'flip' the Barn for different moments of your day.

If you reserve a tent but the weather looks perfect the week of the wedding, all of our local rental companies have flexible cancellation policies if you decide you don't need it after all.

Do you have a designated indoor space for a ceremony or cocktail hour if needed?

Most of our couples plan to have their ceremony inside the Barn in case of rain. Cocktail hour may also take place inside the Barn.

How does the venue handle a case of unexpected emergencies or logistical issues?

We have a venue manager who is in charge of handling all issues, including vendor load-in and load-out, any first-aid needs, and security matters.

Accommodation and Amenities:

Is there a bridal suite or designated space for the bridal party to prepare?

We offer our 4-bedroom, 2.5-bathroom farmhouse for getting ready! Common areas include the Sun Room, Living Room, Dining Room, and Patio. We haven't designated specific changing areas for each partner; that's up to you.

We also offer the use of our Barn for getting ready; there are restrooms, a changing area (the Parlor) with a mirror, and our mezzanine-level Lounge is available for a fun, relaxing space to hang out with leather club chairs, a vintage vinyl collection, and turntable, and a card table.

Do you offer a coat check service for guests?

Yes, this service is included in your venue fee.

Are there any restrictions or considerations for live bands or DJ setups?

We're happy to speak with them if they have any questions about our electrical capabilities!

Is there a dance floor available, and what size is it?

We do not include a dance floor. However, we have recommendations from several local rental companies who do!

Overall Experience and Service:

Can you provide references or testimonials from previous couples who have hosted their weddings here?

You can view some of our couples' experiences on The Knot and also Zola.

How experienced is your venue staff in handling weddings, and will there be a dedicated coordinator on the day of the event?

Our venue manager and staff have extensive experience with weddings and events!

We require a professional Day-Of Coordinator to run the schedule and timeline for the day and be our venue manager's point of contact for any issues that arise. Although this service isn't included in your venue fee, we do have Day-of Coordinator services available through our venue via a package add-on (pending availability, please inquire). We can also refer you to our preferred list of coordinators.

What is the venue's cancellation policy in case of unforeseen circumstances?

If we have to cancel your event due to an act of God or a similar emergency circumstance, we will refund your venue fee.

If you have to cancel your wedding, we do not provide refunds for any payments already made. However, our Event Insurance Partner offers cancellation insurance for a very reasonable rate; we highly recommend you purchase that for your peace of mind. You can claim to be reimbursed for all payments that have already been made to all vendors, including your venue!

Do you offer any additional services or amenities that would enhance our wedding experience?

We include items worth over $20K in rental value and services in our venue package— to minimize the number of outside rentals and vendors you'll need. Some of these include services like:

  • A parking attendant and coat check

  • Staff to set up and break down your floor plan

  • Farmhouse tables and 250 chairs

  • Many display carts and tables; in-house sound system

  • A portable PA and microphone

  • A digital photo booth

  • An audio guest book

  • A handmade white birch chuppah

  • A black wrought iron wedding arbor

  • A complimentary popcorn station

  • S'mores around the bonfire

  • Access to our collection of decor and service items you can borrow (including bud vases, votive holders, antique china platters, tiered dessert stands and cake stands, beverage dispensers, table runners and more).

  • Our weekend packages provide even more extras—including four nights of accommodations onsite, a mixology workshop to design your signature cocktails, a half-day of photography access on a date of your choice for your engagement session, and more.

Asking these essential questions during your wedding venue tour will provide valuable insights and ensure you make the right choice for your special day. Take your time, consider all aspects, and when you're ready to sign on the dotted line, you'll do so with confidence, knowing that you've found the perfect venue to bring your wedding dreams to life.

How to Host a Magical Upstate New York Weekend Wedding

Dreaming of an upstate New York weekend wedding? Here’s a sample long-weekend wedding itinerary from Black Walnut Farm in the Hudson Valley.

Two brides sitting on a stone bench in a garden at Black Walnut Farm

Weekend weddings in the Rose Garden at Black Walnut Farm

For couples who don’t want to limit their wedding celebration to a single day, multi-day weddings offer a great opportunity to host different events over the course of a whole weekend.

Ask any pair of newlyweds what they would change about their wedding, and you’ll hear a common answer: “It just goes by so fast! Try to slow down and live in the moment!”

One way to be present in the whirlwind of the most important day of your life is to find a venue that offers a weekend wedding package. This will give you plenty of time to host a schedule of events that prioritizes savoring each moment with your nearest and dearest.

If you happen to be seeking a wedding venue in upstate New York that offers a long weekend experience with onsite accommodations, look no further than Black Walnut Farm in the heart of the Hudson Valley. Black Walnut Farm is a historic estate that specializes in weekend-long weddings, offering a destination wedding experience with no passport required. With VIP lodging onsite (the historic 1747 farmhouse sleeps 8) for four whole days included— and a wide array of hotels within a few miles of the property— Black Walnut makes hosting several days of celebrations a snap!

Hammocks, fire pits, and majestic forests: The Hudson Valley’s Black Walnut Farm has all the weekend wedding inclusions of your dreams.

Here are some of our top tips for throwing an epic and memorable wedding weekend:

Provide a map or list of local attractions for your guests

If your guests spend several days in the charming Hudson Valley, they'll have some downtime to explore between your wedding-related events. One touch we love is to make a map of activities and places that mean a lot to you as a couple! You can create this on your wedding website, print it out, and place it in welcome bags for your guests or our favorite– do this in Google Maps so everyone has directions right on their phone. (We did this with a Google Map of our favorite Hudson Valley Antiques Shops, and our guests love it)! Your map might include your favorite hiking trails, brunch spots, art galleries, or bookstores.

Black Walnut Farm is in Saugerties, which has so many fun attractions: your guests can tour the historic Saugerties Lighthouse, go hiking at the Falling Waters Preserve, visit the Catskill Animal Sanctuaryrent a boat for a leisurely sail on the Hudson River, go antiquing, enjoy a massage or other spa day treatments at The Waterside Spa, or visit the number of famous wineries, breweries, and distilleries in the area. The Hudson Valley is renowned for its local farmer's markets, farm-to-table dining, and the art scene home to so many artisans, musicians, and creatives. There's no shortage of fun things to do!

Make a playlist to for your guests to enjoy on their road trip to the area

Since the Hudson Valley is about 90 minutes north of New York City, a lot of your guests will either be driving up from Manhattan, Brooklyn or Long Island– or taking the bus from Port Authority or the Amtrak train from Penn Station. One way to kick off the wedding weekend vibes before people even arrive? Make a playlist of your favorite tunes that fit the vibe of your wedding, and send everyone the link– we promise, they’ll get excited, relaxed, and ready for an epic weekend of fun! It’s details like this that truly make your wedding so special and memorable.

Host a few events surrounding the wedding day

Nowadays, it’s common to have a rehearsal dinner for the wedding party, close friends, and family, but including your entire guest list in a welcome party (this could be just cocktails or dessert after the rehearsal dinner) is a great way to catch up with everyone, make your guests feel extra welcome, and enjoy more time with everyone who’s traveled to share in your day!

You can either host something ‘official’ for your welcome gathering requiring an RSVP, or pick a local bar and let guests know that’s where you’ll be if they’d like to stop by, say hello, and grab a casual beverage (just make sure you let the bar know, so they can staff up and be prepared for a crowd.) This also takes the pressure off personally greeting everyone the next day: if you don’t plan on ‘making the rounds’ of each table to thank everyone for coming to the wedding, guests will still feel like they had quality time with you the evening before.

We also love the tradition of extending the personal connection time with a post-wedding breakfast or brunch. This provides a final moment to reminisce about the new memories made and send everyone off with gratitude (and bagels– this is New York, after all!)

A peek inside a weekend wedding itinerary at Black Walnut Farm

To get an idea of the possibilies for a great weekend wedding timeline, here’s a sample itinerary of what a classic weekend wedding experience holds at Black Walnut Farm.

Thursday: arrive and settle in

The long weekend wedding experience kicks off on Thursday, with check-in at 3 pm, so settle in and prepare to relax! From the moment you step foot on the property, you’ll be captivated by the sheer beauty and tranquility surrounding you. Drop your luggage in the farmhouse, where you’re greeted with local cheeses, fruit, and sommelier-selected local wines. Stroll through the extensive gardens, soak in the picturesque open fields, or relax in one of the hammocks dotted throughout the property. There’s no need to rush out to the grocery store immediately because weekend wedding packages include a fully stocked fridge with breakfast items, gourmet snacks, and local provisions for your group!

Many couples prefer a private evening on Thursday before the rest of your guests arrive on Friday. Black Walnut Farm is about soaking in every moment and letting leisurely hours roll by. Romantic dinner options nearby for you two include Miss Lucy’s KitchenBlackbarn Hudson ValleyAnnarella’sThe Kitchen at Salt and Fire, and The Red Onion. Stroll through town and enjoy a treat from Alleyway Ice Cream. Return to the farmhouse after a delicious meal and cozy up in front of the 8-foot fireplace in the living room- starting your weekend well-rested and content.

Friday: let’s get the party started!

For most groups, guests will start arriving on Friday. There are multiple options nearby for arranging hotel blocks. You can coordinate experiences for their afternoon, like a wine-tasting trip (the Hudson Valley has a lot of great options; our favorite is Whitecliff Vineyard) or a brewery or distillery tour (check out Arrowood Farms in nearby Accord). We can also arrange a group yoga class at the Farm.

For the rehearsal dinner, couples may opt to host this right onsite at Black Walnut Farm: we offer use of our grounds and setup crew all weekend at no additional charge! We can recommend local food trucks if you want something fun and casual (and our lawn games like cornhole, horseshoes, ladder golf, giant Jenga, and badminton are a fun addition to a chill evening). We have outdoor sound capabilities for playing music or amplifying welcome toasts. We have had couples include karaoke or even a talent show if the wedding guests are artistically inclined!

If you prefer to host a rehearsal dinner or welcome dinner at a local restaurant, here are some local recommendations:

Our local gastro pub has a tent out back for groups, with solid food and regional craft beers (they have wine/cocktails, too)-- Jim and I are obsessed with their fried pickles! They offer an excellent private events dinner menu, but this could be a fun place for people to meet for drinks.

Located in a beautiful old restored farmhouse in Woodstock, Cucina can host private dinners of varying sizes; the cuisine is farm-to-table with a light Italian influence

Located in nearby Kingston, this is a large, boisterous Southern-inspired spot on the Hudson that can accommodate groups. Their catering menu is also budget-friendly for groups of 30 or more.

This is our seasonal ‘local’- only open April-Halloween; Partition is an open-air bar with tons of seating and live music– and the food is good too! This would be our choice for a very large group meetup.

Whatever option you choose, we recommend that welcome festivities wrap up at a reasonable hour to give everyone time to get adequate rest before the big day!

A peaceful start

Time to rise and shine: it’s your wedding day! Since you’ll be staying onsite in our beautiful restored 1747 farmhouse, you can enjoy a leisurely start to the day (without having to schlep all of your wedding attire and details items to a hotel or other location to get ready!) We recommend a walk on our private nature trails in the crisp morning air as the perfect way to get in that peaceful, calm mindset!

Breakfast: fuel for the day!

Next, breakfast: We have arranged for our local bagel shop, Lox of Bagels, to cater a lovely breakfast spread for you and your getting-ready crew in the farmhouse kitchen! Options include homemade quiches, platters of bagels, lox, and all the fixins, muffins, pastries, yogurt parfaits, fresh fruit, breakfast wraps, and even hot items like homefries and bacon. They will drop off your breakfast anytime after 7:00 a.m. We can include a bloody mary bar or mimosas upon request!

Getting Ready

The farmhouse offers four bedrooms for the entire wedding party to spread out and get ready, with common areas including the dining room, patio, living room, and sunroom (glam teams LOVE the sunroom for its abundance of natural light all around.

If you prefer separate getting-ready areas for each member of the couple, the Barn also provides plenty of space, with restrooms, the Parlor with multiple mirrors and a vanity counter with excellent lighting, and the Loft, which includes leather club chairs and a card table.

History lives on in one of New York's oldest settlements

The historic estate was established in 1747 as one of the first ten settlements in the county. Every nook and corner of the property is overflowing with the timeless charm of a bygone era. Originally built as a Way Station and Guest House offering ale, bread, and a comfortable bed to weary travelers between Albany and Manhattan, there are over 275 years of hospitality at the heart of Black Walnut Farm. Now, that spirit lives on as the Farm hosts milestone gatherings of family and friends from around the world. You'll instantly feel the spirit of home, warmth, and conviviality the moment you step onto the grounds.

The Grounds at Black Walnut Farm

Features and moments on the grounds

The estate sprawls across 34 acres of land, with stunning indoor spaces and outdoor locations for incredible photo ops. Private nature trails wind along a quaint creek through acres of forests. Beautiful gardens are sprinkled throughout the property, filled with native plants, flowering shrubs, quaint stone benches, and antique iron lawn furniture.

Lovely open meadows stretch out to the horizon, filled with wildflowers and a glimpse of the Catskill mountains in the background. The rolling landscapes of the Farm are filled with tucked-away treasures like swings and hammocks, birdbaths and sundials, and all sorts of celebrations of nature (you might even spot a garden gnome or two!).

And, the acres of woods across the property are worthy of a fairytale.

Ceremony Site Options

Outdoor ceremonies are particularly magical, as you and your loved ones gather in the meticulously manicured gardens or expansive open fields, surrounded by the beauty of nature.

The grounds at Black Walnut Farm offer three different options for breathtaking outdoor ceremony spaces, each with its own distinct feel– whether you're having an intimate wedding with a small ceremony or something more grand. Exchange your vows against the backdrop of the fairytale-worthy Forest Site, the natural, sweeping Meadow Site, or the pristine Lawn Site. Whichever option you choose, they are all a short walk from the Barn. The venue provides a portable, rechargeable PA system with a microphone, so even ceremonies in the most remote corners of the property can access stellar-sounding pre-recorded ceremony music and clear, amplified vows.

Cocktail Hour and Reception Spaces

An Amish garden shed with a bar inside at Black Walnut Farm

The Front Lawn of the Barn features an Amish garden shed with a secret, hidden bar inside– ready to delight your guests with signature cocktails infused with herbs and botanicals grown right on the property and homemade syrups made with love by the resident Farmtender. Host a lively cocktail hour filled with lawn games, or enjoy locally distilled bourbon around the roaring bonfire after dinner, with complimentary s'mores service. The venue provides patio heaters for cool evenings with crisp breezes rolling off the Catskills.

Guests love to pose for photos by the classic 1934 green Chevrolet truck, which is one of the most unique venue offerings of the Farm and is included in every event rental. A complimentary popcorn machine with a station for seasonings and salts will satisfy late-night snack cravings.

The Barn at Black Walnut Farm

An eclectic and artistic rustic barn interior with mismatched vintage chairs and a gallery wall at Black Walnut Farm

As if the stunning outdoor spaces didn't offer enough variety and beauty, the Barn is a rustic, elegant indoor reception event space that seamlessly merges views of the great outdoors with the modern amenities of a top-tier wedding venue. Originally built in 1891, the Barn was once used for raising horses but now a perfect venue for parties and special events- complete with a 4-foot disco ball.

The venue effortlessly combines rustic features full of character with the beauty of nature, creating a one-of-a-kind experience. And, because modern conveniences are essential, the Barn now features heating, air-conditioning, and state-of-the-art sound and lighting systems that can be customized for every moment of a special event.

The Barn is intimate but features several distinct areas:

The Dance Hall

The Dance Hall is the main room and features a large chandelier and antique sconces reclaimed from a former dance hall. Street-lamp-inspired vintage lighting fixtures accent the central pillar of the room, with string lights glowing overhead.

Golden hour light streams in through a custom window wall install made from antique windows reclaimed from a former mansion in the Hudson Valley, and as the sun sets, the oversized disco ball glitters overhead. All lighting in the Barn is on dimmers to create the perfect vibe for each moment.

The dance hall can be set with rustic farmhouse tables and mismatched antique chairs (provided by the venue) for dinner service– about 80 guests can be accommodated in this space for dining (with an option to seat an additional 30 on the mezzanine). It's also common for larger groups to dine outdoors in a tent and utilize the entirety of the Barn for cocktails and dancing.

A large white tent outside the Barn at Black Walnut Farm

The Bar

Set back from the main dance hall is the bar area where guests can slip away from the party to order local wines, Old Fashioneds, or Kings Highway Spritzes before returning to the dance floor. The bar features stunning antique lanterns for the perfect sultry ambiance.

The Lounge

Up on the mezzanine level in the former hayloft of the Barn is a lounge area bursting with character. Leather lounge seating, Persian rugs, and antique Tiffany lamps create a speakeasy cigar bar feel. A curated gallery wall stretches up to the rafters with dozens of one-of-a-kind paintings and photographs to admire. One of the most popular features is a wall of vintage vinyl albums, with gems from Elvis and Johnny Cash, classic country-western and jazz records, throwback soul and rhythm and blues albums, and some fun surprises. Since the lounge area doubles as a getting-ready suite on the wedding day, a record player connects to the house sound system via Bluetooth, and wedding party members can take turns playing DJ while relaxing and prepping for the day's festivities.

The Lounge is also home to a complimentary Audio Guest Book, tucked inside a 1940s phone booth reclaimed from an old hotel in Brooklyn. The Audio Guest Book looks like a vintage rotary phone: when the receiver is picked up, guests are prompted to leave a message for the newlywed couple, and the venue will send the audio files to the couple following the wedding. It's easy to see why Audio Guest Books have become so popular: having the voices of your loved ones immortalized forever on your wedding day is simply priceless.

Crowning the Lounge are three more antique chandeliers, an epic view of the disco ball, and high-top cocktail tables where guests can enjoy conversation and drinks, accompanied by a dance floor view. Upon request, the Lounge can also be set with dining tables and utilized for additional dinner seating for 30 more guests.

The Loft

Up at the very top of the Barn, you'll find the Loft: this area is equipped with more lounge seating, and DJs can set up there and preside over the dance floor (they are also welcome to set up on the main floor). Photographers and videographers are also welcome to use the Loft to capture overhead shots of the room below.

The Parlour and Restrooms

The Barn features a waiting room for the restrooms (which are ADA-accessible) called the Parlour. This space departs from the 'rustic barn' feel and brings us into a glamorous space filled with pink marble countertops, crystal chandeliers, gilded sconces, and a rose-colored Victorian tufted velvet sofa. This space is a fun surprise and gives an entirely different photo backdrop for your wedding photographer to capture!

The Farmhouse

The icing on the cake: onsite accommodations! The historic Dutch stone farmhouse, built in 1747, looks straight out of a storybook with its ivy-covered exterior. The farmhouse can sleep 8-10 people in 4 charming guest rooms, offering a resort-style feel for a long weekend wedding. You'll have a gorgeous, cozy, and relaxing 'home base' just steps away from the festivities, complete with a private fire pit, cozy common areas, two wood-burning fireplaces, and a hot tub for instant stress relief.

The farmhouse provides plenty of space for getting ready on the wedding day. With four bedrooms, a freshly remodeled kitchen, common areas including a living room, dining room, patio, all-season sunroom, and a large wedding suite with an ensuite bathroom, there's ample room to relax and spread out– much more comfortable than the entire wedding party cramming into a small hotel room for hair and makeup services! Glam teams especially love the sunroom with floor-to-ceiling windows on three sides, allowing tons of natural light to perfect the makeup looks on the big day.

The Farmhouse at Black Walnut Farm was dubbed 'the most charming country home' by Hudson Valley Magazine, and guests have described it as 'walking through the most magical antique shop crossed with a real-life Pinterest board.'

Convenient location, remote feel

One of the best things about the property is how centrally located it is: while the upstate New York area has no shortage of gorgeous venues, Black Walnut Farm is unique, with a perfect location that feels totally secluded and remote-- but is only 5 minutes away from downtown Saugerties. The Village of Saugerties is filled with art galleries, antique shops, lively bars, and a diverse array of restaurants. Everything you need is located within minutes of the Farm, giving you the peace of mind that only a convenient location can offer. If you forget anything, you'll find CVS, several grocery stores, and retailers like Target just minutes away.

Local lodging options

There are several local hotels in Saugerties within a five-minute drive of Black Walnut Farm: The Diamond Mills Hotel, Holiday Inn Express, Howard Johnson by Wyndham, and Comfort Inn, which makes the venue very convenient for your guests.

Several additional national hotel brands are within seven miles of Black Walnut Farm in nearby Kingston, including Hampton Inn by Hilton, Courtyard By Marriott, Residence Inn by Marriott, and Best Western. Many guests today prefer to stay at hotels where they earn or redeem loyalty rewards points rather than the traditional wedding 'hotel block,' and plenty of great options are nearby. There are also numerous vacation rental homes, Airbnbs, Bed and Breakfasts, and incredible boutique hotels and inns in the area. Many upstate New York wedding venues located in more remote corners of the Catskills lack local lodging, and it can be stressful to find accommodations for your guests– not the case at Black Walnut Farm.

Getting to Black Walnut Farm

While it may seem like a world away from the hustle and bustle of midtown Manhattan, Black Walnut Farm is conveniently located just a 90-minute drive from the George Washington Bridge. Nestled within the town of Saugerties, the Farm is within a short drive of major cities and towns in the Upstate NY area, including Poughkeepsie, New Paltz, Rhinebeck, Woodstock, Kingston, and Hudson. It's the ideal location for couples seeking a getaway wedding without venturing too far from the comforts of home.

The Albany airport is 45 minutes away, making it easy for friends and family from afar to join in the festivities and share in your joy. While Black Walnut Farm is just a quick drive away from Manhattan, Brooklyn, Long Island, New Jersey, Connecticut, or Upstate New York's capital region, it's also ideal for guests who don't want to travel by car: Saugerties is easily accessed by train or bus from New York City and the surrounding Hudson Valley towns via Amtrak (the closest station is Rhinecliff) or Trailways Bus.
