Antique charm meets modern comfort at Black Walnut Farm, an idyllic escape on 34 acres of open meadows and forested woodland in upstate New York’s Hudson Valley region.
The stone house is a piece of living history, built in 1747 by Dutch settlers. The farm offers private nature trails along a scenic creek, lush gardens, two woodburning fireplaces, and eclectic antique decor nodding to a bygone era. Enjoy modern luxuries like state-of-the-art heating/cooling units in each room, hi-speed WIFI, smart speakers throughout the house, a fully equipped updated kitchen, an outdoor fire pit, and a hot tub to unwind under the stars. Your new favorite getaway awaits!
"The property is a true hidden gem in Saugerties, where it sits peacefully on 35 acres of open meadows and forested woodland. It dates back to circa 1747, and its vintage colonial design honors the history engrained within its walls."

The Historic Railroad
Black Walnut Farm is tucked into the woods 200 yards behind the historic West Shore Railroad (est. 1885). This was one of the first train lines to connect trading and commerce between our state capitol Albany and a brand new ‘upstart’ metropolitan area called Manhattan (via Jersey City).
This is still an active train track today! The trains are part of our character and charm, but they are audible from the house. We provide ear plugs for sensitive ears or light sleepers. There is no publicly available train schedule (these are freight trains), they run sporadically and sometimes do run overnight.
Meet Miss Lily
When we closed on the farm, we discovered a full-time resident already living here: a sweet cat named Miss Lily!
She lives in the barn and works very hard in her role as groundskeeper, concierge, official mascot, and property manager. Her daily duties include sunbathing in the rose garden, chasing chipmunks, and slurping up little bowls of cream that we leave out for her sometimes.
Miss Lily is gentle and friendly, and she may come out to say hello during your stay (however, if you have a dog she’ll probably stay out of sight). She never comes into the house.

A. We love children, and have designed the space with eye to whimsy and imagination (for kids of all ages!)... Some of our biggest fans are 4-12 years old! We provide a pack n play, and a cabinet of games and puzzles— plus tons of outdoor space to play, run around, and explore. However, we are in no way ‘child-proof’, or kid-safe. There are breakable items pretty much everywhere, sharp corners, and all that jazz. Toddlers on-the-move will need a little supervision.

A. Yes! We know your littles might not want to spend the whole stay in antique shops :) Check out the Catskill Animal Sanctuary to meet cows, pigs, chickens, goats, ducks, sheep, and horses on a walking tour and hear the stories of their lives and why they were rescued. At The Saugerties Marina you can rent kayaks, canoes, powerboats, peddle boats, and pontoons to explore the Esopus Creek and Hudson River. Zipline New York is open to kids that meet the 50 lb weight requirement, and features 6 ziplines (longest is 650 feet!), 4 suspension bridges, and 9 tree platforms. Puttin Plus Mini Golf also offers GoKarts, batting cages, water tag, an arcade, and snack bar. And don’t miss Alleyway Ice Cream, specializing in cool, creative ice cream flavors like Thai Tea Cookies & Cream and Buttermilk Strawberry. Get a scoop and bring some pints home!

A. Albany International Airport is about a 45-minute drive.
-
A. We think you’ll want wheels! Although it’s definitely possible to travel from NYC via train (Amtrak to Rhinecliff Station), or bus (Trailways to Kingston) and get a car service to the house, there’s nothing walkable from the property, and Uber etc are not plentiful in this area. Via car, it’s 4-8 minutes drive to all the main attractions and shops in the area.
-
A. We absolutely love The Dutch Alehouse for amazing local craft beers and excellent German-inspired fare (schnitzel and spaetzle and sausages oh my!)— and Miss Lucy’s Kitchen is a must for fabulous food and cocktails (they are famous for their desserts). In summertime, The Partition offers great bar bites in a casual outdoor atmosphere with cornhole, karaoke, and a super family-friendly environment.

What People Are Saying

“My nights spent in the downstairs bedroom and in the large guest suite upstairs were both especially memorable. Not because of the historic train which reminds me of sweet nostalgic summers spent at my grandmother's country house, but because of their super luxe and tranquil offerings. From the soft linens to the incredible mattress (!!) to the songs of cardinals and warblers in the morning, and all of the handpicked touches like local tchotchkes, soaps, and moody lighting made for an unforgettable stay in the most quaint escape of NY. Every room at Black Walnut Farm offers a new daydream to be transported to and I highly recommend settling in for the impeccable journey. While you're here, be sure to say hello to Miss Lilly as you roam the stunning property to discover more and more magical corners at every turn.”

“This has been the most MAGICAL weekend at one of the most beautiful places we’ve ever stayed in. I was so impressed by every little detail. Absolutely nothing was forgotten or overlooked. It was so clear how deeply the owners care about their guests’ comfort. I want to reserve my dates for the next few years because I know as soon as the word gets out about this beautiful farm that it will be impossible to steal a reservation!”
